According to statistical data, in 1996 not more than 7% of working age adults were studying in Lithuania. This witnessed the deplorable state of education in Lithuania. The level of educational attainment of people participating in the labor market of our country was increasingly lagging behind European standards. 1996 was proclaimed to be the European Year of Lifelong Learning. Thus, proper adult education was a requirement dictated by life.
On December 18, 1996, at the meeting of Jonava District Municipality Council, a decision was made to establish an Adult Education Centre in Jonava. The founders of this Centre were Jonava District Municipality, the Stock Company Achema and the Trade Union of the Company Achema. At that time, there was no such entity in Lithuania, which, by the way, is very popular in developed countries.
On September 1, 1997, Jonava Adult Education Centre started its first school year on the premises of Jonava 2nd Secondary School. The opening ceremony of the Centre was attended by many honorable guests - representatives of the Seimas, ministries, municipalities and the county, thus demonstrating that the opening of such centre in Jonava is an important event not only in the district, but also in the whole country. Kleming Erikson, the Mayor of Korsov (Denmark), Jonas Klemensas Sungaila, the Mayor of Jonava District, and Jūratė Matekonienė, a member of the Seimas, cut the opening ribon of the new Centre. At the opening ceremony, Vytas Vaicekauskas, the principal of the Centre, said that "opening of the Adult Education Centre is a very important event, a new turn not only in the education system of the district but also in the education system of Lithuania ”.
On January 4, 2000, an Educational Workers‘ Professional Development Department was established at the Centre. The establishment of this Department is important to all educational staff of the district. Teachers who want to raise their professional qualifications can attend seminars and courses not only in Vilnius and Kaunas, but also in Jonava.
In 2004, the Language Knowledge Qualification Commission of Jonava District Municipality started working in the Centre. The commission organises and carries out the State Language Proficiency and Lithuanian Constitution Fundamentals examinations.
In 2010, the University of the Third Age started operating in the Centre. Today, there are six faculties. Over 350 listeners aged between 40 and 80 attend classes at the University. Here, people not only acquire new knowledge and skills, but also enjoy their leisure time: sing and play in the newly created folk group, travel, take part in health activities, learn different handicrafts. The future prospects include club activities, trips, other interesting leisure activities.
Since September 1, 2018, the Centre has taken over some functions of Jonava Youth School. In the Centre, Youth Classes have been formed and students seeking to acquire basic education have been enrolled. The Centre has changed its name from Jonava Adult Education Centre to Jonava Adult and Youth Education Centre.
